Welcome Home

Updated: Oct 9, 2021

The environment we live in can make it easier or more difficult for New Yorkers to lead healthy lives. Welcome Home is a short film that depicts a day in the life of two people coming from different backgrounds. The film shows the juxtaposition on how socioeconomic status, building health, and the environment (natural and built) impacts the lives of the individuals, and how everyday decisions and activities have an impact on the evolving environment.

The inspiration for this short film was sparked after I viewed Morrisania and Crotona's community health profile conducted in 2018. While exploring the housing and neighborhood conditions sections I observed that only 27 percent of homes occupied by renters throughout Morrisania & Cortona neighborhoods are adequately maintained by landlords meaning they are free from heating breakdowns, cracks, holes, peeling paint and other defects. This was alarming the natural and built environment that is the very buildings we live can impacts our health. Housing that isn't maintained properly can lead to poorer health outcomes and increases respiratory illnesses. In NYC air pollution is major issue and when compared to other areas in New York, Morrisania and Crotona, had the most harmful air pollutant, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), are 7.8 micrograms per cubic meter. Making buildings more energy efficient and safer will positively impact individual health.
